SERGE BAUX Mas Baux |
|
Former professional Rugby player, then businessman, Serge Baux "retired" to buy a vineyard in the Roussillon. But not just any. He may have found one of the greatest sites outside of Beaucastel for Grenache/Mourvedre wines. Between Canet-Roussillon, near Perpignan, and the Mediterranean, is a plateau of "galet-roulets" just as are found in Chateuneuf. Here, climate and soil conditions are perfect for Mourvedre, which Serge is now planting in earnest (practically all his new plantings are of Mourvedre). The Soleil Rouge cuvee, a blend of Grenache and Mourvedre, is one of the great wines of France - rich, ripe, with aging in older barriques and demi-muids and so viscous and velvety it almost coats the tongue.
