Simon Clayfield made the great 1997 Warenmang Estate Shiraz and vinified the 1998 while he was the winemaker at Warrenmang. In 1999 he started his own vineyard and winery at the foot of the beautiful Grampian Range in Western Victoria near the tiny town of Moyston. Moyston, by the way, is reputedly the birthplace of Australian Rules Football, the fascinating blend of rugby, soccer, and decapitation. Simon’s Shiraz is from fruit sourced in the Grampian and Great Western areas and bears the distinctive spicy, peppery character of fruit from this region. Simon ages in a blend of French and American oak, about half of which is new. Every step of the process Simon watches with the greatest attention to detail and of course bottles without filtering. He is one of the best if not the best known winemaker in Australia.
