Henri Gallet

Domaine le Boucharey

Henri Gallet has a tiny holding of 2.75 hectares (6.6 acres) all on the Cote Blonde of Cote-Rotie. The vines are quite varied in age with some being 70 years old. The 1990 became an instant legend, receiving a score of 94 points in The Wine Advocate. The 1991 was no less impressive. The 1996 is our selection of all his barrels, and is in style similar to the ’91, while our ’97 with its ripeness (12.0 degrees natural), soft, velvety texture and rich finish, very much resembles the ’90.

Henri employs a very traditional vinification, with no destemming and no filtering, as well as traditional growing, with a little field-blend Viognier in the assemblage, (7 or 8%). This man is a talented wine-maker, and we are fortunate indeed that he is no longer selling his production to Marcel Guigal.

From Le Classement 1997 Revue du Vin de France

"This tiny producer in Ampuis, who used to sell his grapes to a negoce, H. Gallet decided to increase the amount he bottles a la propriete, and we certainly are not complaining. He is an excellent vinifier who knows how to respect the natural qualities of the appellation. He produces wines that are supple, full of aromatic charm, and ready to drink fairly young in small vintages. Unfortunately, for the French, a large amount of the harvest is exported."
