Pierre Jequier, a Swiss, was an architect in Geneva, but his passion for wine drew him to learn more and more about soils and winemaking and eventually leave his practice to take up the life of a vigneron. In 1999 he and a financial backer from Switzerland acquired the Mas Foulaquier just outside of Claret, in the northern part of the appellation Pic St. Loup. This is the warmest part of the entire appellation, and the vineyards are in a formation that is basically shaped like a bowl for catching the sun. As a consequence Pierre Jequier’s vintage 1999 was well over 14 degrees natural for all of his cuvees. As he continues to improve the quality of the vines he will be getting even greater ripeness. Pierre is also very well informed about developments in winemaking throughout France, having particularly close friendships with Marcel Lapierre in Beaujolais and Richaud in Cairanne, and his interest in learning the techniques of the best show in his very well made wines. The names of his different cuvees he has selected from migratory birds that pass through this area of the Languedoc and who have become his friends in the vineyards, when he is pruning. The Mas de Foulaquier had a very rundown cellar when Pierre acquired it. He has put his architectural knowledge, creativity, and talent together to have designed one of the most beautiful and functional cellars in the entire south of France.
