Kevin Mitchell

Kilikanoon Wines
Clare Valley

The Mitchell family, Kevin and his father, Mort, have been growers for more than 30 years in the Clare Valley. In 1997, Kevin purchased the facility known as Kilikanoon in the Skillogalee Valley, and his first vintage under the name was the 1997 vintage. The main vineyards for the Shiraz, Riesling and Cabernet were all planted 25 years ago in the Morts Block and Blocks Road parcels in the Leasingham District of the Clare Valley where the soil is Terra Rossa (red-brown clay) soil over limestone allowing excellent drainage and proper pH for vinifera. Virtually all of the wines are dry-farmed and all are picked by hand.

Kevin has several offerings. The powerful (about 15% alcohol natural) but smooth Prodigal Grenache spends fourteen months in French oak (though no new oak). The Cabernet Sauvignon is aged entirely in French oak, about half new oak, for fifteen months. It too is very ripe, often 14%. The flagship of the domaine is the Oracle Shiraz, always between 14.5 and 15 degrees natural, aged in about half French and half American oak, about one half of the total is new oak. All of these are estate bottled and unfiltered.

Starting with the 1998 vintage, Kevin is making a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon that he calls "Siblings" with exceptional texture and balance, and an absolutely fantastic value

The Watervale district of the Clare Valley is famous for its Rieslings and Kilikanoon produces one of the best, with their own vines in Morts Block that attain excellent natural ripeness and at the same time, lovely natural acidity. At yields of only one and a half to two tons to the acre, it has plenty of concentration and length.

Kilikanoon is one of the cornerstones of our Australian portfolio.
