Herve and Pascaline Leferrer

Domaine du Grand Cres

Herve Leferrer was the winemaker and regisseur at the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti from 1984 through 1988. In 1988 he and his wife Pascaline acquired property in the Corbieres on a mountain named Le Grand Cres.

Here the Leferrers planted for the most part Syrah, and in this barren white-rocked terrain of this region, this varietal displays considerable finesse. His traditional cuvee of Corbieres, half from older vines Grenache and one quarter older vines Cinsault together with one quarter younger vines Syrah, is remarkably balanced and finely textured.

The Cuvee Majeure, Leferrer’s top cuvee of 100% Syrah, from the vines he planted in 1988 is all barrique aged, one-half new oak. This wine is more powerful and more complex. Both of his cuvees are bottled unfiltered. I began with the mention of Herve Leferrer’s experience at the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti not only to impress with is obvious talent and expertise, but I also feel that his background in Burgundy shows itself in the style of his wines. These must certainly be some of the most graceful, balanced, and, if you will, Burgundian styled wines of the Languedoc.
