Pascal and Nicolas Reverdy |
|
I think it is safe to say that Nicholas and Pascal are the two tallest individuals to inhabit (or ever to have inhabited) the tiny hamlet of Maimbray nestled in a valley surrounded by chalk hills, nearing mountains in steepness, about one kilometer, at right angles, from both Chavignol and Verdigny. It is a very modest, humble-looking cellar they have, as they bootstrap their operation up year by year, having begun with virtually no capital. But already in France they are regarded as the finest producers of Sancerre Rouge, and with the ’96 vintage they won the Medaille D’Or in Paris for the top Sancerre Blanc, from cuvee La Coute, which we import. La Coute is one of those very steep hills above-referenced and two-thirds of the vines are over fifty years old. The yields are very low, about 45 hl/ha, with excellent natural ripeness and awesome concentration of Sauvignon/mineral character. I love Sancerre, especially Sancerres like this! The Vieilles Vignes cuvee is all their vines over 60 years old, mostly from a parcel (their steepest) named Lot, and the yields are less than 40 hl/ha. This cuvee is fermented entirely in barrique of one and two years. The Coute cuvee is available both with a light gravity filtration, and also unfiltered. The Vieilles Vignes is not filtered.
