SCHIAVENZA

One doesn’t go into a renowned area like Barolo to find something ordinary for one’s clients. We had the good fortune to find not a top quality producer, but a like-minded one, as well, in Luciano Schiavenza.

There are no barriques in Luciano’s cellar for Barolo. He has only 8 hectares total of Dolcetto, Barbera, Barolo. He works the vine himself and has a high proportion of old vines near Serralunga. He crafts traditional Barolo, with great depth and balance. Moreover, he has parcels in Il Prapo and Terruzza, two of the top single vineyards around Serralunga.

I personally love great Barolo and so it was easy to love Luciano Schiavenza’s wines.

In Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe and great wines, the Azienda Agricola Schiavenza has been working since 1956.

The activity was set up by the Alessandria brothers, Ugo and Vittorio, and is now run by the second generation of the family: the daughters Enrica and Maura along with her husband Luciano Pira who takes care of the product from the vines to the bottle. The farmhouse and the surrounding land were part of the Opera Pia Barolo property and all the work was carried out buy the sharecroppers, which in Piedmontese dialect, were called "Schiavenza", thus the origin of the company name. The farm and its lands grew under the care of our family until reaching its present form; a total of 8 hectares, most of which are in Serralunga d’Alba including some famous Cru such as Broglio, Prapò Bricco Cerretta, and in the territory of Monforte d’Alba in the village of Perno. From these vineyards the company produces good quality red wines with traditional working methods
