We met the Truchots at a little restaurant in the hills above the Cote D’Or in 1985 before we ever thought of importing wine. They invited us to taste their wines and we fell in love with Jacky’s style of wine. It was the first wine we imported and we have stayed with this domaine from our beginning. To describe Jacky’s style is difficult, but to experience his wines is unforgettable and like a great artist, his wines have such style and uniqueness, that they are immediately recognizable. They are extremely perfumed, full of fruit, with long and complex finishes; they are never harsh or tannic, and at the Grand Cru level combine great finesse with weight and longevity. Jacky started as a grower when he returned from the war in Algeria in 1961 working for his cousin, Henri Mauffre. Mr. Mauffre had marvelous holdings in Gevrey and Morey and taught Jacky winemaking. Thus, the vinification style that Jacky knows is that of the early 60’s and if you want to experience Burgundy of that epoch, this is perhaps the only grower left who is adhering to the traditions of that period. When Mauffre died in 1978, his widow sold the domaine to Jacky and his wife Lilane. The vines are now of a very high average age with the Combottes being nearly sixty years old and the Charmes Chambertin nearly eighty. Jacky neither fines nor filters any of his wines. They also may have the prettiest label in Burgundy featuring a picture of the village of Morey St Denis taken from the vineyards in 1943. Jacky Truchot’s web site
