Poppie and James met during the harvest of 1997 while working together in the cellar at a custom crush house in Oregon. Shortly after, they had fallen madly in love, married and began plans for a new endeavor: a winery of their own. Four years later they relocated their home to the Columbia Gorge; where passion for Rhône wines led them to explore the emerging potential of vineyards in Washington.

Syncline Winery is located along the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in southern Washington State. The lay of the land is rugged beauty with stunning geological features. Here, the Columbia River cuts the only sea-level passageway through the Cascade Mountain Range.

The winery and estate vineyards are located on a southern slope, on the eastern edge of the Columbia Gorge AVA. It is at this point that the rainy west transitions to the semi-arid east. From the first conception of the winery, Poppie and James have believed in the uniqueness and potential of a small family owned vineyard in Washington state. In order to achieve their vision they have built a winery and planted vines based on the simple designs and demands of a wine growing family, while working with a select group of grower-partners who collaborate to deliver expressive and exemplary grapes. They have kept production under 6,000 cases annually to ensure intimacy with each barrel and every vine.
